RECORD STORE DAY / DIRTY THING 7″

March 31, 2010

Hello!

Record Stores! If you are like me, these musical safe havens are still an important part of your lives, despite the ease of use iTunes, eMusic, and Amazon (among many others) have bestowed upon us. There are certain things I just can’t let go of. Take for instance, photography. I absolutely cannot use a digital camera. All the pictures I take with them suck. Even the photographs I take with my iPhone using the ‘vintage holga’ app still never, ever come out as cool as a real live Polaroid, or a 35mm print from my Pentax K1000 with real full frame borders, that are actually random. It’s the actual feeling of holding these now archaic devices that I just can’t get from a digital device.

The same thing is true with music. For me, it’s such a visceral experience, before it is an aural one. I mean, think back to the days that you used to go browse your local record store, and you would see an album from the artwork you recognized in Rolling Stone, or Spin, or Under The Radar. Picture yourself asking the clerk behind the counter for a listening copy, taking it back to the listening stations, and listening to what would soon become your very favorite record for the very first time. It would soon become your best friend. It would soon remind you of girlfriends, boyfriends, or seasons.

For me, I still thrive on these experiences. I am lucky enough to live in a city like Seattle, Washington which is home to many great record stores, the two powerhouses being Easy Street Records and Sonic Boom Records. Both stores are absolutely incredible, but Sonic Boom holds a special place in my heart because it was my place of employment for a year or so. I was probably the most broke, financially speaking, I’ve ever been (the owners there figured out a way for you to take records you would purchase directly out of your paycheck. Danger!). But working there was also one of the happiest times of my life. I knew everything about everything. I could tell you all the major new releases, indie releases, electronic, indie pop, old school gems, big record labels, super small record labels, it was pretty insane. I absolutely loved helping people find great music, and talk to them about it, and reevaluate the recommendation I had them purchase the next week they would come in. I made friends working there so instantly. Music is like a secret handshake. You can just say keywords, like: ‘GBV? The Kinks? The Clipse?’ And immediately you’re the best of friends.

Now, admittedly this can happen on the internet, and I want to make completely certain that I don’t come across as knocking it. iTunes is amazing, and it’s amazing how many people have discovered my band through that outlet. I am in awe of it, how it works, and how it is making people aware of music. The people that work there are awesome, and I appreciate it so very much. Also, using the internet you can spread the word about music via Twitter, Myspace, blogs, Facebook, and it’s all amazing, and beneficial to the artists (I can speak from experience on this front). Unfortunately, I just can’t wrap my head around it all.

It makes me sad though, to see the number of shoppers in Sonic Boom and Easy Street, and mom and pop stores around the world dwindling.

Which brings me to Record Store Day 2010. It happens on April 17th, and it’s to raise awareness of record stores all around the globe. To commemorate this, Merge Records is putting out a 7″ record with two brand new never before released Telekinesis songs on it, Dirty Thing, and Non-Toxic, as well as a cover of the pre Joy Division band Warsaw. It is only available on 7″, and only available for Record Store day. I’m super proud of it.

So, on that day, disconnect your computers, and go to your local record store, and speak to the fine people that work there. You’ll find that you have a lot in common with them, and that you’ll discover a whole heck of a lot of cool music.

So hooray for Record Stores. They are absolutely necessary, and I love them. Buy vinyl! Purchase a turntable! It will make you happier. Your ears will thank you.

BERLIN / SAN FRANCISCO / MUSIC

March 1, 2010

Hello!

I just got back from a frosty few weeks in Berlin, Germany. If you haven’t had the pleasure of visiting that fine city, I strongly suggest you bump it up on that ever-growing list of places to visit. It’s a truly wonderful city, and I am thankful to get to spend lots of time there. It’s like a second home now!

I’m off to San Francisco today to begin work on TK LP2 @ Tiny Telephone with Chris Walla. We’re road tripping it down there in my giant white Chevy Express, and I couldn’t be more excited to do a jet lagged Californian road trip with anyone but Walla. I’m sure that we will listen to RUSH at some point during our many hours of the open road. I’m also sure that we will marvel at the memories of seeing Lake Shasta so many times, and what it signifies in a tour. Road trips are fun!

I’m excited to get into the studio again, and will try to take lots of pictures whilst there!

In the ‘music is fun to listen to’ category, here are a few of my favourite things:

King Tuff – Sun Medallion
Dukes Of Stratosphere – Have You Seen Jackie?
American Analog Set – Cool Kids Keep
Bell Plaines – Where Are You Going?
Bill Fox – Let’s Be Buried Together

Hooray!

Take care of yourselves,
M/B/L/

LAURA VEIRS

February 10, 2010

Dear friends:

Hello from Berlin! It’s cold, and snowy, and absolutey dreamy here. This city continues to be my total favorite.

Laura Veirs also continues to be my favorite. She just put out a new record (on her own label, I believe?), called “July Flame”. It is such an amazing record. I strongly encourage everyone to go purchase it. She (and Tucker and co.) continue to put out challenging, beautiful records. I’m a believer.

Go find it!

Stay warm!
